Kava Cacao Elixir

I first learned about Kava (Piper methysticum) from a Plant Spirit Medicine class at SW Herb in downtown Mesa. We gathered in a circle and were invited to partake in the ceremonial drink of Kava. Kava drink is a social beverage, used in all types of ceremonies, used as medicine and as a soothing relaxant. Kavalactones within the root produce the calming and mellow effects that kava is known for.

I remember taking a drink of Kava, it had an extremely rooty and earthy flavor, it also brought a relaxing almost tingling feeling to my mouth. Kava is a shrub with heart-shaped leaves growing in humid, tropical lands of the Pacific Islands of Hawaii and Fiji, it’s native to Vanuatu. It’s called the root of happiness and has been used for centuries. It’s currently only propagated by hand.

Kava can be used to calm nerves, cause relaxation and sleep, fight fatigue, to clear urinary tracts, to lose weight, relieve asthma and arthritis. Used for headaches, cramps, to restore strength, soothes stomach pains, and relieves skin disorders.

I came across a really delicious Kava Cacao Elixir recipe in my herbal witchy book that I want to share with you all. I enjoy this drink when I’m intending to open my heart, come into a relaxed and euphoric state, release endorphins, and bring in pleasure and joy. The Kava relaxes the body and releases tension, but the cacao has a more stimulating effect.
