NO-WASTE Herbal Dog Treats
No-Waste Dog Treats: A Nutritious, Homemade Recipe
After making bone broth, you're often left with a treasure trove of nutrition that feels too good to waste. Instead of tossing out those leftover bones and organs, why not turn them into healthy, homemade dog treats? Cooked bones are typically dangerous for dogs, but when slow-cooked properly, they become soft and blendable—perfect for making a nutritious treat! My pups love these, often performing tricks before I even give a command. You can also customize them with herbs to support your dog's health, whether for detox, digestion, or joint care.
The Benefits of Bones, Skin, Ligaments, and Tendons for Dogs
Bones, skin, ligaments, and tendons are packed with essential nutrients that contribute to your dog's overall health. These parts provide collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, and essential minerals, all of which support joint health, skin elasticity, and digestive function. Collagen promotes a healthy coat and skin, while glucosamine and chondroitin aid in maintaining strong joints and reducing inflammation. The minerals from bones, such as calcium and phosphorus, are crucial for maintaining strong teeth and bones. Including these in your dog's diet helps ensure they get the necessary nutrients for a long, active life.
How to Make No-Waste Dog Treats (Herbs Optional!)
Supplies Needed:
Cast iron pan
Stove
Instant Pot
Oven
Vitamix or other high-powered blender
Silicone spatula
Cookie sheet
Parchment paper
Pizza cutter
Ingredients:
1 whole chicken (preferably free-range, organic, non-GMO, or antibiotic-free)
Ghee for searing
1-2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
Filtered water
Optional: Herbs for added benefits (see suggestions below)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken
Remove the chicken from its packaging. Set aside the internal organs in the fridge—you’ll use them later for the bone broth.
Pat the chicken dry on all sides.
Heat a cast iron pan on medium heat with ghee.
Sear the chicken for a few minutes on all sides using tongs.
Preheat your oven to 425°F.
Transfer the cast iron pan with the chicken into the oven.
Use an internal thermometer and cook until the thickest part of the chicken reaches 175°F. Alternatively, bake for about an hour and check for doneness.
Remove from the oven and let it cool.
Step 2: Make Bone Broth
Once the chicken has cooled, debone it and store the meat in a glass container for future meals.
Place the bones, cartilage, and saved organs into the Instant Pot.
(Optional) Add dog-safe vegetables, avoiding onions and garlic as they are toxic to dogs.
Cover with filtered water and add 1-2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar.
Secure the lid and cook on high pressure for 4 hours.
Strain the broth carefully—it's hot!
Test the bones by pinching them between your fingers. If they mush easily, they’re ready to blend. If not, return them to the Instant Pot with a cup or two of broth and cook for another 30 minutes.
Step 3: Blend the Bones
Once softened, add the bones and 1 cup of strained bone broth into a high-powered blender.
(Optional) Add herbs for extra health benefits (see suggestions below). When adding herbal powders, I used 1/4 tsp. When using dried herbs or roots, I added 1 tsp.
Start blending on low speed, then gradually increase to high until the mixture is completely smooth.
If any bones do not blend fully or remain hard, be sure to remove them before proceeding to the next step.
Step 4: Dehydrate the Treats
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, ensuring it extends beyond the edges to prevent spills.
Pour the blended mixture onto the parchment-lined sheet.
Use a spatula to spread the mixture evenly.
Preheat your oven to 200°F and dehydrate for 2 hours.
Remove from the oven and use a pizza cutter to score the treats into small squares.
Return to the oven and dehydrate for another 2 hours at 200°F.
Let the treats cool on the counter before breaking them apart.
Store in an airtight jar and start treating your pup!
