Homemade Healing Bone Broth

As a society we have fallen a long way away from eating foods that heal. I’ve been making bone broth for a long time now, and it’s been so nourishing for our family. Every week or so I make bone stock as it’s packed with vitamins, nutrients, and minerals our bodies need on a daily basis to thrive! I then throw it into different meals I make for it’s medicinal properties. Some people like to drink a cup a day, but I like to use it in soups, rice, sauces, etc.

This is why you should be making homemade bone broth:

  • Easily absorbed minerals such as magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, sulphur, and phosphorus.

  • Contains Gelatin that can heal your gut! It repairs the intestinal lining and reduces inflammation.

  • Contains collagen that can heal your joints and keeps your skin beautiful.

  • Boosts your immune system.

  • Contains Glutathione which promotes tissue regeneration.

  • Helps your body detoxify from heavy metals and toxins.

  • Contains glycine that promotes cognitive performance and improves circulation to the brain, helps you sleep, reduces depression and anxiety.

  • Contains chondroitin, which is shown to have an important role in regeneration and plasticity in the central nervous system.

  • And so much more!

Each batch is a little different but these are the main things you need to include:

  • roasted bones/carcass (organic, pasture raised, grass-fed, local only IF POSSIBLE)

  • Filtered water

  • Apple Cider Vinegar (Organic, Non Gmo IF POSSIBLE)

  • chopped onion

  • Celery sticks

  • carrot stick

  • garlic bulb cut it half

  • celtic sea salt or redmonds sea salt (don’t use table salt)

  • Black pepper

Here are completely optional things to add if on hand or want to find at your farmers market, local stores:

tumeric root
ginger root
dried chaga
dried astragalus root
dried reishi
kombu
fresh thyme
fresh Rosemary
bay leaf

  5. put on lid, set to seal, put on pressure for 3 hours.

  6. when the time is up, throw a towel over the vent, and quick release.

  7. open lid, let cool a bit, strain into jars, discard the bones/veggies, start using your amazing medicinal broth! If you plan on freezing, cool in fridge before putting in the freezer.

Directions (FOR SLOW COOKER):

  1. put the roasted bones in your slow cooker.

  2. pile in any chopped veggies and herbs you want to include.

  3. add in a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

  4. fill with filtered water until just to the top of the lip of the slow cooker.

  5. put on lid, set to low, cook for 24 hours.

  6. when the time is up, let cool a bit, then carefully open lid, let cool a bit, strain into jars, discard the bones/veggies, start using your amazing medicinal broth! If you plan on freezing, cool in fridge before putting in the freezer.

Some other random tips, buy meat with bones, and save the bones after you cook them by throwing them in a bag in your freezer. Once you have enough bones to make a batch of broth, throw them in your pot and your good to go. Make sure you roast your bones first, this gives them great flavor!

What do you like to throw into your broth? Have you ever made your own before?
