DIY Laundry Powder

I’ve been on a mission to make my own household cleaning supplies and I found the perfect Laundry Powder recipe a couple months ago! After years and years of buying brand name laundry soap, scrubbing powder, and concentrated cleaners, I am excited to be able to inexpensively throw together a few simple ingredients to have a multi-purpose cleaner. Many cleaning products out there are packed with harmful ingredients and fragrances even when they say they are natural, organic, or plant-based. Because of this we are unintentionally disrupting our hormones, increasing environmental toxins in the home, irritating our skin, respiratory system, and so much more! My goal is to simplify those products and detox our home.

This recipe uses 3 simple ingredients that most people already have in their home: Borax, Washing Soda, and Baking soda. We’ve been using this recipe for a couple months now and I love how fresh and clean it leaves all our clothes. I even use it to clean our stainless steel kitchen sink and scrub our toilets!

Borax: sodium tetraborate $5.97 at Wal-mart
- whiten and brighten clothes, get rid of odors, and soften hard water to reduce mineral deposits left behind on fabrics.

Washing soda: sodium carbonate $4.52 on Amazon
- stripping action to remove residues of oils, minerals, and fabric softeners.

Baking Soda: sodium bicarbonate $9.99 at Costco
- Removes odors, boost detergent and bleach performance, soften clothes, and control detergent suds.

Very in-expensive to buy the supplies or use if you already have them on hand. You will also have leftovers to to make many batches in the future as well!

April Graham shared this laundry alternative recipe in her latest book, Essentially Deadly:

2 cups washing soda

2 cups baking soda

2 cups borax

Optional Add-ins:

1/2 cup powdered fragrant herb: like lavender, lemon peel, or orange peel.

1 bar unscented soap grated with a food processor or cheese grater.

Mix well to combine and store in an airtight container. Use 1/4-1/2 cup per load.

For our home, this 6 cup powder recipe lasted us two months, which means that it’s only costing us a few dollars a month - So simple! So inexpensive! Have you ever made your own Laundry soap or multi-purpose cleaner?
